## In short

A family photoshoot in Bali costs from $180 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited photos in 48–72 hours. The best area is the one you are staying in: Sanur or Nusa Dua for calm water at sunrise, Seminyak or Jimbaran for sunset sand, an Ubud villa garden for a cool morning. Skip long drives and steep cove stairs with toddlers.

With children, the drive is the enemy of the photographs. A toddler who has spent an hour and a half in a car seat does not run happily along a beach, so a family session in Bali is planned from where the family already is — and families choose their bases for reasons that also suit a shoot. Sanur and Nusa Dua have calm, reef-protected water and flat sand, and they face the sunrise. Seminyak and Legian have wide beaches and sunset light within walking distance of the villas. Jimbaran has a sunset bay with boats children like to climb near. Ubud has villa gardens, pools and a cooler morning. The Bukit is stunning but its coves are down long stairs, which is a different proposition with a pushchair or a grandparent. Pick the area that suits the family; the backdrop follows.

## How the shoot is planned

On an east-facing beach — Sanur or Nusa Dua — we meet at about 6:15, start with two or three group portraits while everyone is clean and awake, then let the children go: paddling in the flat water, digging, being swung between parents. By seven the sun is up and the family heads to breakfast. On the west coast the same plan runs backwards from sunset: group frames first in the warm light, then play at the waterline, and the last ten minutes for the couple or a parent with each child while the sky colours. At an Ubud villa the pool and garden carry the session, with a short walk to a field edge if the children are up for it. On the Bukit we choose a clifftop lawn or a beach with road access such as Melasti over a stair-only cove. Breaks for water and shade are built in, not taken out of the half hour.

## Timing

The sun rises around six and sets around half past six all year, and by nine it is hot and bright everywhere on the coast, so families have two windows. East-facing Sanur and Nusa Dua are best at sunrise, which suits children who wake early anyway. The west coast is best in the last hour before sunset, which runs into dinner time — bring snacks. Ubud is a few degrees cooler and works in the early morning. From November to March, choose the morning wherever you stay, because storms build after lunch. School holidays — July, August, Christmas — bring the most families to the beaches, so an early start matters more then.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Bali beach is calmest for toddlers?

Sanur and Nusa Dua: both sit behind reefs, so at most tides the water near the sand is shallow and flat. The west-coast beaches — Seminyak, Legian, Canggu — have surf and currents, which is fine for photographs at the waterline but not for little ones wading in. Jimbaran’s bay is calmer than the open west coast and gives you the sunset as well.

### Our grandparents are with us. Should we avoid Uluwatu?

Not Uluwatu, just the stair-only coves. Padang Padang and Bingin are reached by long, steep steps; Melasti has a road almost to the sand, and the clifftop lawns need no climbing at all. Tell us who is coming when you book and we choose a spot everyone can reach comfortably.

### We have a big villa group in Canggu. Beach or villa?

Often both: big group portraits at the villa, where everyone is ready and nobody walks in front of the camera, then the beach at sunset for each family on its own. Half an hour fits one of the two well; with an extra hour ($100) there is time for both and for the cousins to be photographed together as well.

### Is it worth driving to Ubud from the beach for the rice terraces?

With small children, usually not for a 30-minute shoot: it is one to one and a half hours each way, and the terraces are at their best at sunrise. If you are spending a day in Ubud anyway, plan the session there that morning. Otherwise the paddy lanes behind Canggu give a green backdrop ten minutes from the beach.
