## In short

Elopement photography on Nusa Penida costs from $890 for 30 minutes — your vows and portraits straight after — with 15+ edited photos, a preview within 48 hours and the full gallery in 2–3 weeks. We use a quiet south-coast cliff point or your stay’s garden, not the crowded viewpoints. The island transfer is $90.

An elopement on Nusa Penida is a wedding for two people who want the wildest coastline within reach of Bali and are happy to trade comfort for it. It is not a venue wedding: there are no cliff chapels here, and the famous viewpoints are public, fenced and busy, so saying vows at the Kelingking railing would mean doing it in a queue. What works is the quieter south and south-east coast, where the plateau ends in long cliff points like Saren and Banah with no platform and few visitors, or the garden of a clifftop place you have rented. You bring a celebrant if you want one, or simply read your vows to each other. Most couples marry legally at home first, because an Indonesian legal marriage for foreigners is a long paper process; the ceremony here is the one you will actually remember.

## How the shoot is planned

We reach the cliff point about forty minutes before the vows, to walk the ground with your celebrant and pick a flat place well back from the edge where the wind will not drown your voices. A few minutes of details first: the rings, the vow cards, flowers if you brought them. The ceremony itself runs about ten minutes and is photographed from two sides — wide, so the cliff and the sea make the scale of the day, and close, for your faces when the words land. Then the celebrant steps away and the remaining time is yours: portraits walking along the cliff line, sitting in the grass with the ocean behind, one quiet frame of the two of you just standing there. With extra hours, we start earlier with getting ready at your stay.

## Timing

Late afternoon is usually the best time for vows on the south coast: the light comes in low from the side, the cliffs turn warm, and the day-trippers have gone back to the harbour. The sun sets over the west of the island, so we place the ceremony about an hour and a half before sunset and keep the last light for portraits. Sunrise on the east coast is the alternative for couples who want it truly empty. April to October gives the most reliable weather but also the strongest trade wind on the cliffs, which is why we pick a spot with some shelter. Avoid Nyepi, when no boats run, and keep a spare day — crossings are sometimes cancelled in strong wind.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is an elopement on Nusa Penida legally binding?

Not by itself. A legal marriage in Indonesia for foreigners means a religious ceremony followed by civil registration, with translated and legalised documents, and it is usually arranged through a planner on Bali rather than on Penida. Most couples marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. The photographs are the same either way.

### Can we say our vows at Kelingking?

You can stand there and say them, but you cannot close the platform or set anything up, and outside the early morning you will be surrounded by visitors. If Kelingking is the photograph you want, we do the vows somewhere quiet and walk to Kelingking for portraits as an extra hour, in the late-afternoon window.

### Do you provide a celebrant, flowers or a set-up?

No — we photograph the day. A celebrant, flowers and any decoration are booked separately, usually through a planner on Bali who sends them over on the boat with you. On a wild clifftop less is more anyway: a bouquet, the rings and your words photograph better than an arch fighting the wind.

### What if our boat is cancelled on the wedding day?

Plan so it cannot ruin the day: cross the day before and sleep on Penida, with the photographer on the island too. Strong trade winds cancel boats mostly in July and August, and usually for a day, not a week. If the weather closes in on the day itself, we move the vows to the next morning; the preview still arrives within 48 hours of the shoot.
