## In short

Drone video in Labuan Bajo costs from $320 for 30 minutes of flying over Padar, Pink Beach, the harbour or your phinisi. You receive a 60–90 second aerial edit plus the raw clips in 5–7 days. Komodo National Park entry, any drone permit fees and the boat itself are not included.

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park, and its landscape only makes sense in motion and from above: three bays curving out from Padar’s ridges, a pink-tinged beach against deep blue, a wooden phinisi cutting a white wake between islands that look like crumpled green velvet. A drone video captures that geography in a way no viewpoint photo can. The park is protected, and flights inside it depend on permits and ranger guidance, so this session is planned around where and when the operator can fly, not just around the most shared viewpoint.

## How the shoot is planned

Most drone sessions here happen on a boat day, and the 30 minutes of flying go where the light and the permits are best. At Padar we launch from the lower trail once the ranger has confirmed it is allowed, and follow you up the ridge as the light rises, then climb high for the three-bay panorama that defines the island. Back on board, the phinisi becomes the subject: a slow orbit around the deck, a pass along the hull with the sails up, a reveal from the bow to the islands ahead. Pink Beach can follow, flown low over the shallows where the sand shows its colour best, with you walking the tideline. Half an hour covers one or two of these stops properly, so we agree which ones before the day. If you are not on a boat, the session moves to land: the hills above town and the harbour at sunset, crowded with phinisi at anchor.

## Timing

Sunrise on Padar is the defining slot, around 6 am local time, which means leaving the harbour well before dawn or sleeping on board nearby. Light is soft until about 8 am, after which the hillsides flatten and the trail fills with day-trippers. Flores has a long dry season, roughly April to November; by August the hills turn golden brown, while January to March brings green slopes, more rain and rougher crossings. Wind and currents between the islands are strong, and the operator will ground the drone in gusts rather than risk it over open water. Sunset over the harbour, around 6 pm, is a calmer alternative on the day you arrive.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is flying a drone allowed in Komodo National Park?

Drone use in Komodo National Park is regulated by the park authority on top of national drone rules, and commercial or drone filming may require a separate permit and fee. Rules and enforcement change, and rangers on Padar or Komodo Island can restrict flights on the day. We check the current requirements before your date, apply where needed and fly only with permission. Permit fees are not included in the price and are passed on at cost.

### What will the drone video cost in total, with the boat and park?

The drone session is from $320 for 30 minutes, a 60–90 second edit and raw clips. On top of that you pay the national park entry fee, any drone permit fee, and the boat: either your own phinisi charter, a seat on a shared day trip with space for our operator, or a private speedboat. We quote the operator’s place on the boat in advance so there are no surprises. Flights from Bali and hotels are your own arrangement.

### How do we get to Labuan Bajo from Bali?

Direct flights from Bali to Labuan Bajo take a little over an hour and run several times a day. The airport is a few minutes from town and the harbour. Multi-day phinisi trips also sail from Lombok, though that route takes several days. We suggest flying in at least one day before the drone session, so a delayed flight or a windy morning does not cost you the shoot.

### What should we wear to look good in aerial video?

Bright solid colours stand out against the blue water and brown or green hills: red, orange, yellow or clean white. A long dress, a sarong or a loose shirt adds movement on the phinisi deck, where there is almost always a breeze. For the Padar climb wear trainers and light clothes, as the steps are steep and it is warm even at dawn; you can change at the top. Avoid khaki and camouflage tones that blend into the dry hills.
