## In short

A drone photoshoot on Lombok costs from $240 for 30 minutes with a licensed pilot, usually over Gerupuk bay’s seaweed farms, Mawun or Selong Belanak. Each location is checked against airport airspace before the day. You receive 15+ edited aerial photos — top-down and wide frames, no video — within 48–72 hours.

From the ground, Lombok’s south coast is a series of bays; from sixty metres up, it is a pattern. Seaweed farms lie in neat grids across Gerupuk bay, long-tail boats are moored in lines, the surf on Selong Belanak draws parallel white stripes over pale sand, and a person lying on the beach becomes a single deliberate mark in all of it. That is what a drone photoshoot here is for — not a higher version of the photo you could take from Merese, but frames that only exist from above. The constraint is the airport. Lombok International sits inland near Praya, and its controlled airspace extends towards the Kuta area, so some places you might expect to fly are restricted or need clearance. We check every location against the airspace map before the day and choose the ones where a licensed pilot can fly legally, and where the patterns are strongest.

## How the shoot is planned

Take Selong Belanak at about 7.30 am, when the surf schools have not yet laid out their boards. The pilot launches from the car park at the western end and climbs while you walk onto the sand. First, top-down frames: you lying in the wet sand where the waves have just retreated, so the foam forms a white arc around you; then standing on the line between dry and wet sand, with the shadow stretched long beside you. We direct you by phone or hand signals, since you cannot hear the pilot from up there. Next come wider, angled frames showing you small against the full curve of the bay and the green hills behind. If the boards appear, we use their colour too — one line of bright rectangles with you at the end of it.

## Timing

Drone light works differently from ground light. Top-down frames love a higher sun, which turns shallow water turquoise and shows the seabed — mid-morning, around 8 to 10, before the trade wind builds, is the sweet spot on Lombok. Sunrise and late afternoon give long shadows, which make a top-down frame of a person graphic and dramatic. Wind decides more than light: the south-east trade wind of the dry season, May to September, often gusts above safe limits on the headlands by late morning, so we fly early. In the wet season the air is calmer between storms but rain grounds the drone entirely. On race days at the Mandalika circuit, nearby airspace is closed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you fly over Merese Hill and Tanjung Aan?

Sometimes, depending on the current airspace rules near the airport and the Mandalika area, which we check for your date. If flying there is not allowed, we say so before you book and suggest Gerupuk or the bays further west, where the aerial patterns are often stronger anyway.

### Do we also get ground photos?

No, this service is aerial only: 15+ edited photos from the drone. For ground and aerial together, book a photo session such as a couple or honeymoon shoot and add the drone add-on ($150), which brings a pilot to work alongside the photographer.

### What happens if it is too windy to fly?

The pilot decides on site, and safety wins. We move the flight to another morning at no charge, or to a sheltered bay if one is within reach. On Lombok the wind is most predictable at dawn, which is why we book early slots by default.

### Can the pilot come over from Bali for this?

Yes. The island-transfer add-on ($90) covers the pilot’s car and crossing, timed to your plans. Your own boat or flight tickets and local entry fees are separate.
