## In short

A drone photoshoot in Canggu costs from $240 for 30 minutes and gives you 15+ edited aerial photos — top-down and wide frames, no video — within 48–72 hours. A licensed pilot checks the airport-zone rules for your spot first; the reef at Seseh and Cemagi and the paddies inland usually work, crowded Batu Bolong does not.

From above, Canggu turns into graphics. Black sand becomes a dark field with the surf drawn across it in white lines; the reef shelf at Seseh and Cemagi becomes a texture of rock and pools; a paddy lane becomes a green grid with one small figure walking it. Those are the frames a drone photoshoot here is for — top-down and wide pictures of you in the landscape, no video. The honest limits come first, though. Canggu sits within the zones around Ngurah Rai airport where flight height is restricted, temples and ceremonies are off-limits, and we do not fly over crowds, which rules out Batu Bolong at sunset. What works is the emptier coast to the north and the remaining fields inland, flown low. Low is not a weakness for this kind of shot: top-down portraits look best from a modest height, where you are still recognisable.

## How the shoot is planned

A few days before, the pilot checks your chosen spot against the current airspace rules and tells you plainly whether and how high it can be flown. On the day we meet on the coast at Seseh or Cemagi at a falling tide. The pilot walks the area first — wind, people, the temple on the point, which we keep well clear of — then launches. The first frames are directly overhead: you lying on the dark sand in a light outfit, arms out or curled together, with the white wash reaching towards you; then standing in a pool on the reef shelf so the sky reflects around your feet. Then the drone pulls back for wide frames along the coast, you small at the edge of the surf. If there is time, we finish five minutes inland on a paddy lane, walking the raised path between fields for a top-down green frame. The photographer on the ground directs you over the phone or by hand signals.

## Timing

Early morning and the last two hours before sunset are best: the wind is usually lighter, and the low sun throws long shadows that give top-down frames depth — at midday the light is flat and the sand too hot to lie on. Sunrise is around 6 to 6:30 am and sunset around 6 to 6:45 pm through the year. A falling or low tide exposes the reef shelf and its pools, so we match the date to the tide table. The dry season, April to October, has the most flyable days; from November to March, rain grounds the drone and storms often build after 3 pm, so mornings are the better bet and a backup date is wise. Temple ceremonies on the coast mean no flying that day.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you fly over Batu Bolong or Tanah Lot?

Usually not. Batu Bolong at sunset is full of people, and we do not fly over crowds; early morning, from the water side, is occasionally possible. Tanah Lot is a temple, and flying near it needs the temple’s permission, which is rarely given. The quieter coast at Seseh and Cemagi gives the same black sand and surf from above without those problems.

### What should we wear for top-down photos?

Something that contrasts with what you are lying on: white, red or a bright colour on black sand; white or terracotta on green rice. From above, shape matters more than detail, so a long skirt or a dress that spreads out reads better than a fitted outfit. Avoid black — you will vanish into the sand.

### What if our spot turns out to be a no-fly area?

We tell you before you pay, not on the day. If your preferred place cannot be flown, we suggest the nearest one that can — in Canggu that usually means moving a few kilometres north along the coast. If wind or rain grounds the drone on the day, we move to the next suitable slot at no cost.

### We also want photos from the ground. What should we book?

If ground photos matter as much as the aerial ones, book a couple or holiday photoshoot with the drone add-on ($150): a photographer leads the session and the pilot joins for a set of frames from above. The drone photoshoot on its own is for people who mainly want the aerial pictures and are happy with just those.
