## In short

A drone photoshoot in Bali costs from $240 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited aerial photos in 48–72 hours. Flying is usually possible over Ubud’s terraces, the Bukit cliffs away from the temple, Canggu’s fields and coast, and Nusa Penida. Not around the airport — Kuta, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, parts of Sanur — or over temples without permission.

With a drone, the first question about any part of Bali is not "is it beautiful" but "may we fly there". The island divides fairly clearly. Much of the south around Ngurah Rai airport — Kuta, Tuban, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and parts of Sanur — lies in restricted airspace, so it is out. Temples are out unless the temple gives permission, and many have banned drones; Ulun Danu Beratan does not allow them over the grounds. National parks need their own permit. What remains is a lot: Ubud’s rice terraces, which turn into curved patterns from above; the Bukit cliffs and the reef colours below them, away from Pura Luhur Uluwatu; Canggu’s fields and black-sand coast; Nusa Penida’s coastline. Choosing an area for a drone shoot means choosing from that list, and then picking the spot with the right light and the fewest people.

## How the shoot is planned

Before the day we check your chosen spot against the restricted zones and confirm it with you. Over the Ubud terraces the session starts at sunrise: you stand on a terrace ridge or lie on a path between paddies, and the pilot works from top-down patterns to low, wide frames that show you in the valley, before the paths fill. On the Bukit it runs late in the day: a figure on a white limestone ledge with the reef below, or the two of you on an empty stretch of sand at low tide, with long shadows. In Canggu it is a rice field with a palm-lined dyke, or the black sand and surf lines at Pererenan or Cemagi. On Nusa Penida the coast is spectacular from above but the viewpoints are crowded, and we never fly over groups, so an early or late slot at a quieter cliff is the plan. Drone sessions do not take an extra hour, so a second area is a second booking.

## Timing

Low sun is what makes aerial photographs three-dimensional: sunrise over the Ubud terraces, the last hour before sunset on the Bukit and the Canggu coast. Late morning has its own use — it shows the clearest turquoise over reef and sand — but harsh shadows on people. Wind decides more than season: the dry-season trade winds, roughly April to October, can make exposed cliffs too gusty to fly safely, while mornings are calmest everywhere. From November to March, afternoon storms and low cloud ground the drone more often, so we plan early starts and keep a second date. On festival days, processions and ceremonies mean more places where we will not fly.

## What is included

The Drone photoshoot package in Bali covers: 15+ edited aerial photos; Top-down and wide frames of you in the landscape; Location checked against no-fly zones before the day; Directions on where to stand and how to lie for overhead frames; Private online gallery within 48–72 hours. Nothing is added to the price after the shoot. Permits worth knowing about: Pura Lempuyang Luhur (Gates of Heaven) — donation around IDR 100,000 with sarong, plus a shuttle up the hill; numbered queue for the gate photo; Pura Ulun Danu Beratan — ticket around IDR 75,000 for foreign adults; no drones over the temple; Jatiluwih Rice Terraces — entry around IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors; the walking trails are free once inside; Mount Batur — a licensed local guide is required for the summit trek, paid separately; the Kintamani rim viewpoints are free; Tukad Cepung Waterfall — entry around IDR 20,000; expect wet feet — the path runs along the stream; Sekumpul Waterfall — entry with a local guide, from around IDR 125,000 depending on route; steep stairs, about 30 minutes down.

## Frequently asked questions

### We are staying in Jimbaran or Nusa Dua. Can we still do a drone shoot?

Yes, but not at your hotel. Both areas are inside the restricted airspace around the airport. The nearest usual options are the cliffs and beaches further south on the Bukit, around Uluwatu and Melasti, which are generally outside the zone; the drive is short from Jimbaran and a little longer from Nusa Dua. We confirm the exact spot before you book.

### Can you fly over Tegallalang?

Usually yes, at sunrise, before the paths and swings fill with visitors — we do not fly over crowds. Later in the morning, quieter terraces nearby or at Jatiluwih give cleaner aerial patterns without people scattered through the frame. Some private terrace operators set their own rules, which we follow.

### Can we combine a drone shoot with photos from the ground?

Yes: book a photo session such as a couple photoshoot and add the $150 drone add-on, or book both services together. The pilot and the photographer then work the same location and light. Bear in mind that the drone part follows the airspace rules, so the location must be one where flying is allowed.

### Is Nusa Penida worth it for aerial photos?

It is some of the strongest coastline in Indonesia from above, so yes if you are going. Add the $90 island transfer for the pilot plus your own boat tickets, and plan for early or late light, when the viewpoints are quieter and flying near them is reasonable. Strong wind on the cliffs can cancel a flight, so keep a spare slot.
