## Where drones can fly, and where they cannot

A drone photoshoot in Bali is 30 minutes of aerial photography with you in the frame, from $240, with 15+ edited aerial photos delivered within 48–72 hours. From above, Bali turns into patterns: the curved lines of rice terraces, a white beach against turquoise reef, a figure on a cliff edge above the surf. The drone pilot directs you from the ground, positions you where the composition works — at the end of a jetty, on a sandbar, in a field of green — and shoots straight down as well as at angles that show the horizon.

Indonesian rules shape where we can fly. Drones must stay below a height limit, away from airports and out of restricted areas; much of south Bali around Ngurah Rai airport — parts of Kuta, Jimbaran and Sanur — is a no-fly zone, so we choose spots outside it. Flying over temples and ceremonies needs permission, and we do not fly over crowds. National parks such as Komodo or Bromo Tengger Semeru charge entry and may require separate drone permits, which are not included. Within those limits, Nusa Penida, the Uluwatu cliffs, the Ubud terraces and the north coast all work well.

Light and wind decide the timing. Sunrise and the last hour before sunset give long shadows that make terraces and cliffs look three-dimensional, while late morning shows the clearest colour in reef water. Wind on exposed cliffs, especially in the dry season, can ground a drone for safety, so we keep a backup slot. Bright, solid colours stand out from above far better than pastels or patterns. 15+ edited aerial photos arrive within 48–72 hours. A drone can also be added to most ground sessions as a $150 add-on.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it legal to fly a drone in Bali?

Yes, within Indonesian rules. Drones are regulated by the Ministry of Transportation and the civil aviation authority, which set a height limit, require the drone to stay in sight, and ban flights near airports, over government and military sites and over crowds. Commercial flying needs the right registration. Our licensed drone pilot flies within those rules; we cannot fly where they say no, whatever the frame.

### Where in Bali can you not fly?

Around Ngurah Rai airport, which rules out much of Kuta, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and parts of Sanur. Over temples and ceremonies, unless the temple has given permission — many have banned drones outright. In national parks such as West Bali, Komodo or Bromo Tengger Semeru, where a separate permit is needed. Nusa Penida, Ubud’s rice fields and most of the Bukit cliffs are usually possible.
