## In short

A wedding photographer in Yogyakarta costs from $1,690 for 30 minutes of coverage — the ceremony or the panggih, plus couple portraits — with 15+ edited photos, previewed within 48 hours and delivered in full in 2–3 weeks. The akad, sungkeman, family groups and reception are added as extra hours at $100 each.

Many weddings in Yogyakarta bring two worlds together: a Javanese family and guests who have flown in from abroad, often seeing these customs for the first time. The day tends to follow Javanese order. After the akad or church blessing comes the panggih, the formal meeting of bride and groom: they throw small bundles of betel leaves at each other, the groom steps on an egg and the bride washes his foot, and later both kneel before their parents in the sungkeman, which is usually the moment that undoes everyone. Yogyakarta also has its own palace bridal style, paes ageng, with the bride’s forehead painted in black shapes and her hair dressed with jasmine. These rites move quickly, in front of a crowd, and the photographer has to know where the next one will happen before it starts.

## How the shoot is planned

With a full day booked through extra hours, it often begins in the morning with the akad nikah at a mosque or the family home, or a church blessing, where we work quietly from the side and keep the camera down during prayers. After a break for the bride’s make-up artist to finish the paes, the panggih takes place at the venue entrance or in the hall: we position one angle facing the couple for the betel-leaf throw and the egg, and move behind the parents for the procession to the stage. The sungkeman follows, close and unhurried. Couple portraits fit in the garden while guests are seated, and the reception is a long receiving line on the decorated stage, with guests coming up in groups — we photograph each one, so agree beforehand which families and friends matter most. Thirty minutes covers one of these blocks; most families book the day.

## Timing

Javanese families often choose the date with care, sometimes by the Javanese calendar, and many weddings cluster in the months after Lebaran; book the photographer as soon as the date is fixed. Muslim families generally avoid Ramadan. The akad is commonly in the morning, while the panggih and reception can run from late morning or afternoon into the evening, so most of the day is indoors or under a marquee rather than in golden light. Portraits are best fitted into the last hour before sunset, around 5 to 6 pm. In the wet season, November to March, plan covered space for every outdoor element; some families still engage a pawang hujan, a traditional rain handler, which makes for a good photo in itself.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many hours do we need for a full Javanese wedding day?

It depends on how many rites you hold and how long the reception is, so we build the plan from your rundown. As a rough guide, the akad, panggih and sungkeman take a few hours between them, and the reception adds several more. The starting price covers 30 minutes; each extra hour is $100, and we tell you the total before you book.

### Can your hair and make-up add-on do the traditional paes?

No. Our $90 hair and make-up add-on is everyday bridal or guest styling. Paes ageng is a specialised craft done by a traditional bridal make-up artist, a perias, who usually also dresses the bride and handles the ritual details. Book one locally through your planner or family, and we plan the schedule around their timing.

### Do venues charge a fee for an outside photographer?

Some hotels and wedding halls do, and some ask for a vendor letter or a meal for the crew. These are set by the venue, not by us, and are not included in the price. Send us the venue name early and we check its rules, so the fee is known before you sign anything.

### Can we also have portraits at a temple?

Yes, but rarely on the wedding day itself — the schedule is too full, and the bridal outfit is heavy. Couples usually book temple portraits on a separate morning or evening, at Prambanan, Ratu Boko or Taman Sari, with a photography permit from the site that we apply for in advance. The permit fee and tickets are paid at cost.
