## In short

A destination wedding photographer on the Gili Islands costs from $1,690 for 30 minutes around the ceremony and your first portraits as a married couple. You receive 15+ edited photos, a preview within 48 hours and the full gallery in 2–3 weeks. Preparations and reception are added in extra hours at $100; the island transfer is $90.

A wedding with guests on the Gilis is an act of logistics before it is anything else. Everyone — family, friends, the celebrant, the florist’s buckets — arrives by boat, often wading the last few metres, and then moves around the island on foot, by bicycle or in a horse cart. Nothing is driven to the venue, including the photographer’s kit, so we bring what fits on a bicycle and plan the day so that nobody, least of all the bride, has to cross the island in a hurry. What you get in return is a wedding where guests stay for days rather than hours, where the ceremony faces the sun going down behind Bali’s Mount Agung, and where the evening carries on barefoot on the sand. The starting package covers the ceremony and your first portraits as a married couple; most Gili weddings add hours for the preparations and the reception.

## How the shoot is planned

The 30-minute core starts as guests take their seats on the beach and the photographer works the aisle from the back: the arrival — on foot down a sandy path, or in a cidomo decorated by the venue — the walk, the faces of parents in the front row. During the vows we shoot from the side rather than from behind the celebrant, so the sea and the horizon stay in frame. Straight after the kiss and the confetti, while guests move to drinks, we take the two of you a hundred metres down the beach for portraits in the last light. With extra hours the day stretches either way: getting ready in your villa or room, the details laid out on a bamboo daybed, group photos before the light goes, then the reception, speeches and first dance on the sand, lit by the venue’s lanterns.

## Timing

Most Gili weddings face west, so the ceremony is best timed to start about an hour before sunset — around 5 pm for most of the year — which leaves the portraits in golden light and group photos before dusk. The dry season, April to October, is wedding season here for good reason: clear evenings and calm water for guests crossing from Bali. July and August are the busiest months, when boats and rooms need booking well ahead. From November to March plan a covered alternative with your venue, as afternoon storms are common, and remember that rough water from December to February can delay guests’ boats. The call to prayer drifts across from the village mosque around sunset; plan the vows to finish before it or simply pause for a minute, as many couples do.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Gili island suits a wedding with guests?

Gili Trawangan has the most accommodation and venues, which matters when thirty guests need rooms, but also the most noise in the evening. Gili Air is the usual compromise: enough places to stay, a calmer feel and a short public boat from Lombok. Gili Meno suits very small weddings that want the beach to themselves. We photograph on whichever island your venue is on.

### Is a wedding on the Gilis legally valid?

Only if you complete the Indonesian process, which for foreigners means a religious ceremony followed by civil registration, with legalised documents that take weeks to prepare. Most couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island with a celebrant. Your planner or celebrant can advise; the photography is the same either way.

### How many hours do we need for a full Gili wedding day?

The 30-minute package covers the ceremony and first portraits. Preparations, group photos and the first part of the reception typically add four to six extra hours, at $100 each. Because nobody drives between locations, the timeline is mostly walking time; we draw it up with your planner around sunset so the ceremony does not land in the wrong light.

### Can guests’ boat delays affect the photography?

They can, which is why we ask that the photographer crosses at least a day early when coming from Bali or Lombok (the island transfer is $90), and suggest your guests do the same. A wedding on the day of a fast-boat arrival is a gamble in rough season. With everyone already on the island, the timeline is entirely in your hands.
