Lombok is what Bali looked like before the crowds found it, and for a couple shoot that means space. The south coast around Kuta Lombok is a chain of wide bays framed by green hills: Merese Hill rolls down to two beaches at once, Tanjung Aan has its coarse “pepper” sand and calm water, Selong Belanak a long curve of soft white sand. You can stand on a ridge at sunset without a queue behind you. Thirty minutes is enough for one bay and its hill, and the photographs carry a rawer, more open landscape than anything on the Bukit.

## How the shoot is planned

The classic session starts at the foot of Merese Hill. We walk up the grassy slope together, shooting as you climb, because the path itself frames you against the bay. On top there are two views: Tanjung Aan on one side and the quieter cove of Merese on the other, with fishing boats and the headland in the distance. We spend most of the session on the ridge as the light warms. To finish on the sand at Tanjung Aan as well, with the last frames at the waterline and the hills turning orange behind you, add an extra hour ($100). If you prefer softer, flatter scenery, we swap the whole route for Selong Belanak, with its wide beach, gentle surf and fishing boats pulled up on the sand.

## Timing

The south coast of Lombok faces the open ocean, so book the session inside the last hour before sunset, around 5 to 6 pm; sunrise from Merese Hill is a beautiful, almost empty alternative if you can be there by 5.45 am. The dry season, roughly April to October, turns the hills golden and keeps skies clear. From November to March the same hills go vivid green, which many couples prefer, though afternoon storms are common and we may move the start earlier. The wind on Merese’s ridge can be strong in July and August, which is good for dresses and less good for hair. Weekday evenings are quieter than Sundays, when local families come to the beaches.

A long dress or a skirt with movement works on Merese’s windy ridge. You will walk up a grassy hill for about ten minutes, so wear sandals or trainers and change shoes at the top if you like. Lombok is a conservative, mostly Muslim island, so cover up when passing through villages.
