# Yogyakarta

> Yogyakarta keeps Borobudur, Prambanan, an active volcano and a coast of sand dunes within an hour or so of a royal city, so a single shoot day here can move from a temple at sunrise to the Indian Ocean at sunset.

The city itself is Java’s cultural heart, still home to a reigning sultan. Around the kraton palace are the bathing pools and passages of Taman Sari, batik workshops, the silversmiths of Kotagede and the long, busy spine of Malioboro. Prawirotaman, south of the palace, is where most visitors stay and where many shoots begin. Traditional Javanese dress — kebaya and batik — photographs beautifully here, and local stylists can arrange it for a pre-wedding session.

Beyond the city the range opens up. Borobudur is about an hour and a half north-west, across the provincial border in Central Java; Prambanan and the hilltop ruins of Ratu Boko sit half an hour east. Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, fills the northern horizon, and jeep tours run up its lava fields at dawn. To the south are the Parangtritis dunes and, in the Gunungkidul hills, pine forests and viewpoints such as Pinus Pengger and HeHa Sky View. A good day here is shaped by distance and light: a temple at sunrise, a slow midday indoors, and the coast or Ratu Boko for sunset.

## When to go

The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the most reliable sunrises; from June to September Merapi is often clear at dawn and mist lies over the plain around Borobudur. The wet season, November to March, brings heavy afternoon rain but green rice fields and dramatic skies — we shoot early and keep the afternoon flexible. Waisak, the Buddhist full-moon festival in May or June, brings a monks’ procession from Mendut to Borobudur and a ticketed lantern release; the temple is closed to normal visits around it. Lebaran week, the June–July school holidays and New Year fill the city and the temples with domestic visitors.

## Photo spots

### Borobudur

- Coordinates: -7.6079, 110.2038
- Best time: First entry in the morning; sunrise over the temple from Punthuk Setumbu hill
- Access and permits: Ticket for the temple grounds; climbing the upper terraces is a separate, quota-limited guided ticket; pre-wedding shoots and drones need written permission from the temple management

The ninth-century Buddhist monument rises in stone terraces to a crown of bell-shaped stupas. Since 2023 visitors reach the upper terraces only in small guided groups wearing special woven sandals, on a timed, quota-limited ticket — book it as soon as your date is fixed. The stupas and statues may not be touched or sat on. For the classic sunrise with Borobudur rising out of mist and Merapi behind, we shoot from Punthuk Setumbu, a hill a few kilometres west, then visit the temple itself in the first slot.

- **June–September**: The best chance of valley mist and a clear Merapi at dawn.
- **December–February**: Sunrise is often clouded out; the stone is darker and richer after rain, good for close portraits.

### Prambanan

- Coordinates: -7.752, 110.4915
- Best time: The last 90 minutes before closing, into sunset
- Access and permits: Entry ticket; pre-wedding shoots with styling need a permit from the park; Ramayana ballet tickets separate

A cluster of soaring ninth-century Hindu towers, the tallest dedicated to Shiva, set on open lawns that give room to step back. In late afternoon the sun comes from the west across the compound: warm side light on the carved stone, then silhouettes of the spires against the sky as it goes down. The lawns and the surrounding smaller shrines give quieter frames than the main courtyard. In the dry season the open-air Ramayana ballet plays on a stage with the temples lit behind — a natural end to the evening.

### Ratu Boko

- Coordinates: -7.7705, 110.4894
- Best time: Sunset
- Access and permits: Entry ticket; sunset access may be priced separately

The ruins of a hilltop palace complex three kilometres south of Prambanan, best known for its tall stone gateway. Framed through the gate at sunset, a couple stands against an open sky with the plain below and, on clear evenings, Merapi on the horizon. It is quieter than the big temples and higher up, so there is often a breeze. Shoot the gateway from the lawn in front for symmetry, then use the terraces and the old bathing pools on the slope for the softer frames after the sun has gone.

### Merapi lava tour (Kaliadem)

- Coordinates: -7.572, 110.444
- Best time: Sunrise, when the summit is usually clear
- Access and permits: Jeep hire per vehicle from Kaliurang; routes depend on Merapi’s current alert level

Open jeeps climb from Kaliurang over the ash and boulder fields left by the 2010 eruption, past a bunker at Kaliadem and a house kept as it was found after the ash fell. The volcano’s cone looms close, and the summit is usually clear at sunrise before cloud builds by mid-morning. The jeep itself is a prop — couples in the back, dust trailing behind. Expect grit: bring a scarf, a lens cloth and clothes you do not mind getting grey. Some areas close whenever the alert level rises.

### Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo

- Coordinates: -8.0185, 110.327
- Best time: Late afternoon, for side light on the ripples, into sunset
- Access and permits: Small entry or parking fee; sandboard rental on site

A rare patch of coastal sand dunes near Parangtritis on the Indian Ocean coast, about forty minutes south of the city. Low afternoon light rakes across the ripples and turns them into texture; a flowing dress against the dune line is the signature frame. The dunes are smaller than photos suggest and are slowly being overgrown, so we choose the angle carefully to keep scrub out of the background. Wind lifts sand into hair and lenses. The beach at Parangtritis, a few minutes away, finishes the evening.

### Taman Sari Water Castle

- Coordinates: -7.81, 110.3594
- Best time: At opening on a weekday morning
- Access and permits: Entry ticket; pre-wedding or commercial shoots pay an additional permit fee

The eighteenth-century pleasure garden of the sultans, a short walk from the kraton. The restored bathing pools with their pale walls and turquoise water are the first frame; the second is Sumur Gumuling, a ring-shaped underground mosque where five stairways meet under an open skylight. That staircase draws a queue of photographers by mid-morning, so we arrive at opening and shoot it first. Light falls straight down through the skylight around midday — beautiful, but also when the crowds peak.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we shoot Borobudur and Prambanan on the same day?

Yes, and it is the classic plan: sunrise at Punthuk Setumbu and Borobudur in the morning, a long midday break, then Prambanan or Ratu Boko for sunset. The two temples are about an hour and a half apart by road. It makes a long day starting around 3:30, so it suits a pre-wedding with extra hours and two outfits better than a family shoot with young children.

### Do the temples allow pre-wedding photography?

Yes, with a permit. Borobudur, Prambanan, Ratu Boko and Taman Sari each charge a separate fee for styled or commercial shoots on top of the entry tickets, and some limit tripods, lighting and drones. We apply in advance once your date and locations are set; the fees are paid at cost and are not part of the package price.

### Which airport should we fly into?

Yogyakarta International (YIA) in Kulon Progo, about an hour west of the city; an airport train connects it to the centre. There are direct flights from Jakarta and Bali. Adisucipto, the old city airport, now handles only a few domestic routes, and Solo’s airport is another option about an hour and a half away for Prambanan.

### Can we be photographed during Waisak at Borobudur?

You can attend and we can photograph you there, but Waisak is a religious ceremony first: the procession and the prayers are not a backdrop for posing, and the temple is closed to ordinary shoots around it. The lantern release is ticketed and sells out. If you want the atmosphere, we suggest documentary-style frames on the day and a separate posed session at the temple on another morning.
