# Ubud (Bali)

> Ubud is a morning town for photographs: by nine the terraces fill and the valley heat flattens the light, but at sunrise the jungle is cool, misty and almost empty.

Ubud sits in a fold of river valleys in the hills of Gianyar, which is why it photographs so differently from the coast. The light arrives late over the eastern ridges and stays soft for an hour; tall palms and ravines give open shade most of the day, so skin tones hold even when the sun is up. That makes it the natural home for flying dress shoots and pre-weddings — long fabric reads beautifully against green, and the terraces give depth without needing the sea.

The catch is that everyone knows this. Tegallalang and the swing parks are busy from mid-morning, and the centre around the palace is gridlocked by late afternoon. We work Ubud from early: terraces or the ridge at sunrise, then a waterfall or a quiet temple courtyard before the tour groups arrive. Villas in Sayan and along the Ayung river are excellent bases — many have their own jungle views, so the second half of a pre-wedding can happen without another drive. Rain is more frequent here than in the south, but it tends to come in the afternoon, and a wet rice field steaming in the next morning's sun is one of the better pictures on the island.

## When to go

Ubud is wetter than the coast all year. April to October brings the clearest sunrises and the driest paths to the waterfalls; July and August are the most crowded, especially at Tegallalang. From November to March afternoon downpours are near-daily, waterfalls run brown after storms, and morning slots are the only reliable ones — but the rice is greenest then and the crowds thin. Galungan and Kuningan turn every village lane into an avenue of penjor, a lovely backdrop, though processions close roads around the palace. Nyepi stops everything, including our shoots, for a full day.

## Photo spots

### Tegallalang Rice Terrace

- Coordinates: -8.4319, 115.2789
- Best time: Sunrise to 8:30, before the coaches
- Access and permits: Entry around IDR 25,000, plus small donations at farmer checkpoints on the paths; swings are extra

The terraces fall steeply into a narrow valley, so the classic view is from the road-side cafés looking down — but the better pictures are on the paths, with a curve of paddies behind you and palms overhead. At sunrise the valley floor is in shade and the upper terraces catch the light; by nine the paths are crowded and the bright sky blows out. Farmers set up small donation points along the way; paying them is part of using their land. Swings and nests sit on the ridges; we use them only if you want them, and we know which ones have the cleanest backgrounds.

- **Dry season**: Clear sunrises, but the busiest paths of the year; be on site by 6:30.
- **Wet season**: Deepest green and fewer people; paths are muddy, so we bring a towel and spare shoes.

### Campuhan Ridge Walk

- Coordinates: -8.5036, 115.2547
- Best time: Sunrise, or the last hour before sunset
- Access and permits: Free; the path starts beside Pura Gunung Lebah

A paved spine of grass-covered ridge between two river gorges, ten minutes' walk from central Ubud. There is no shade, so midday is harsh, but early and late the low sun skims the alang-alang grass and gives a soft, golden backlight. It suits relaxed couple and solo portraits and works for a flying dress when the wind is light. Joggers use it from first light; we pick the stretches beyond the first viewpoint, where the path empties. Respect the small temple at the start — no posing on its walls.

### Tibumana Waterfall

- Coordinates: -8.5268, 115.312
- Best time: Opening to 10:00
- Access and permits: Entry around IDR 20,000; a short stepped path through jungle

A single, even curtain of water into a round pool framed by ferns — simple, symmetrical and one of the easiest waterfalls in Bali for a portrait, because the light in the bowl is shaded and soft for most of the morning. It is about twenty-five minutes from Ubud and far calmer than the more famous falls. The pool is swimmable in the dry season; after storms the current strengthens and we keep shoots on the rocks. Shoes with grip are worth it on the wet steps.

### Kanto Lampo Waterfall

- Coordinates: -8.5361, 115.3337
- Best time: Before 9:00, ahead of the queue for the main rock
- Access and permits: Entry around IDR 15,000–20,000; sarongs are not needed

Water spills down a wall of stepped volcanic rock, which turns the whole fall into a backdrop — you stand in the spray on a ledge and the water fans out behind you. It is the energetic counterpart to Tibumana and a favourite for flowing dresses, though fabric gets heavy fast once wet. A queue for the central ledge forms by mid-morning. Footing is slippery, so we position you carefully and do the movement shots on the flat stones at the base.

### Pura Taman Saraswati & Ubud Palace

- Coordinates: -8.5065, 115.2615
- Best time: Early morning, before the market and traffic
- Access and permits: Free to view from the courtyards; sarong required inside temple grounds; evening dance tickets extra

The lotus pond and carved red-brick gate of Saraswati sit a minute from the palace on the main street, and together they give a shoot the old-Ubud texture the rice fields cannot. Both are working places of worship: we shoot from the public walkways, never on shrines, and step aside for offerings. Lotus flowers are fullest in the morning. In the evening the palace stages Legong and Barong dances by lamplight — a candid, atmospheric add-on for couples, shot without flash and from the audience.

### Sayan Ridge & Ayung Valley

- Coordinates: -8.5005, 115.2435
- Best time: Late afternoon, when the valley fills with side light
- Access and permits: Depends on the villa or venue; many allow guests' shoots, some charge a location fee

West of town the Ayung river cuts a deep gorge lined with villas, infinity pools and jungle terraces. It is where we finish many pre-weddings and honeymoons: the walls of the valley block the harshest sun, and a pool edge facing the gorge gives a frame no public spot can. Most of it is private land, so we arrange access through your villa or a venue we know. Drone shots over the gorge are possible with the owner's agreement and good wind; the canopy rarely gives a clean take-off, so we pick the launch point in advance.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Tegallalang worth it, or is it too crowded?

It is worth it at sunrise and rarely after nine. Before the coaches arrive the paths are quiet and the light is soft; by mid-morning there are queues at the swings and people in every frame. If you cannot start early, we suggest quieter terraces around Keliki or Sayan, or Jatiluwih for a longer pre-wedding with extra hours — the pictures are just as green, without the crowd management.

### Where does the flying dress shoot happen in Ubud?

Usually in rice terraces, on Campuhan Ridge or at a jungle-edge spot where there is room for the fabric to move and some wind to help it. The dress is included and we bring a few colours and sizes; an assistant throws the train for the movement shots. Waterfalls work too, but a wet dress is heavy, so we keep those frames for the end of the session.

### We are staying in the south. Is Ubud a long trip?

From Canggu or Seminyak it is roughly an hour to an hour and a half, more on a weekend afternoon. For a sunrise shoot that means a pickup around 4:30. Many couples instead spend one or two nights in Ubud, which turns an early start into a short walk and lets us use the evening light in the valley as well.

### Do we need to dress modestly for temples in Ubud?

Inside temple grounds everyone wears a sarong and sash, and shoulders should be covered; most temples lend or rent them at the gate. For the shoot itself, we plan the temple frames first in a modest outfit and change afterwards for the rice fields or the villa. Women who are menstruating are asked not to enter temples — a local rule we follow without exception.
