# Seminyak (Bali)

> Seminyak is the shoot for people who want to stay close to the hotel: a long, flat sunset beach within walking distance of most villas, and no drive eating into the session.

Seminyak runs along the same west-facing coast as Canggu, but it is older, more polished and closer to the airport. Grey-gold sand stretches from Double Six up past Petitenget almost without a break, and the beach is wide enough at low tide that we can find empty frames even on a busy evening. Behind it are the villa lanes, boutique hotels and restaurants that make the area popular with families and first-time visitors — which is why most of our sessions here start at a hotel door rather than a car park.

That convenience shapes the shoots. Families book the last half hour before sunset, walk to the beach with children in tow and finish before dinner; couples add a stroll through the white-washed lanes around Jalan Kayu Aya or a frame at their villa pool. Beach clubs line the shore and set their own rules about cameras, so we choose the public stretches between them. Drones are a real limitation here: Seminyak is close to Ngurah Rai, and for aerial work we usually suggest Pererenan or the Bukit instead. Evening traffic is heavy, so staying on foot is not just pleasant, it is practical.

## When to go

April to October gives reliable sunsets and calmer evenings; July, August and the Christmas–New Year weeks bring crowds to every beach club, so we start the session at the waterline away from them. November to March means afternoon storms, westerly wind and, after heavy rain, foam and plastic washed onto the sand — we check the beach the same day and move to a villa or the lanes if it looks bad. Sunrise is no use on this coast; in the wet season we shoot in the morning in soft shade among the lanes instead. Nyepi closes everything for a day.

## Photo spots

### Seminyak & Petitenget Beach

- Coordinates: -8.6865, 115.1557
- Best time: The last hour before sunset
- Access and permits: Free; public beach access lanes between the hotels

A wide, flat beach with a gentle slope, so at low tide the wet sand turns into a mirror and the light reflects up into faces. The sun sets slightly to the right as you look out to sea, which gives a soft side light for portraits facing north along the shore. Children can run freely here; the shore break is milder than at Echo Beach, though rips are still real. We walk away from the clubs' umbrellas to keep frames clean, and the sky often turns pink in the twenty minutes after the sun has gone.

- **Dry season**: Low tide around sunset gives the mirror effect; we pick dates by the tide table.

### Pura Petitenget

- Coordinates: -8.6795, 115.1534
- Best time: Late afternoon, on non-ceremony days
- Access and permits: Free to photograph from outside; sarong needed to enter; closed to visitors during ceremonies

An old sea temple right behind the beach, with weathered stone gates and frangipani trees. We use the outer walls and the path to the sand as a backdrop, which gives a Balinese frame without leaving Seminyak. Ceremonies here are frequent and beautiful; on those days we photograph only from a respectful distance and only if the family or priests are comfortable with it. Shoulders and knees covered near the gates is the polite minimum.

### Double Six Beach

- Coordinates: -8.6993, 115.1637
- Best time: Sunset; busiest from 17:30
- Access and permits: Free; beanbag and umbrella rental is paid to vendors

At the southern end of Seminyak, Double Six is the lively version of the beach: rows of coloured umbrellas and beanbags, football games on the sand, surf lessons and a wide sky. It suits fun, candid family pictures and reels, where people in the background add life rather than clutter. For portraits we step to the waterline and shoot with the umbrellas softly out of focus. The beach road behind it is pedestrian-friendly, so families can walk in from Legian.

### Batu Belig Beach

- Coordinates: -8.6683, 115.1495
- Best time: Sunset, or a quiet weekday afternoon
- Access and permits: Free; access via the Batu Belig road

North of Petitenget, past the river mouth, the beach empties out. Batu Belig has a few hotels and warungs but long stretches with nothing behind you but sand and sky, which makes it our pick for couples who want privacy and for honeymoon frames with an uninterrupted horizon. The river can cut the beach at high water; we approach from the Batu Belig side and check the tide so we are not stranded on the wrong bank at dusk.

### Potato Head Beach Club

- Coordinates: -8.6802, 115.1531
- Best time: Late afternoon, ahead of the sunset rush
- Access and permits: Professional shoots need the venue's approval in advance and may carry a fee or minimum spend

The façade of reclaimed wooden window shutters and the lawn running down to the beach are among Seminyak's most recognisable frames. The club welcomes guests with phones, but a photographer with a camera and a plan is another matter — we arrange permission beforehand or shoot on the public beach just in front, which gives the same sunset without restrictions. Afternoons before five are calmest; after that the lawn fills and music sets the mood rather than the light.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can the photographer meet us at our villa?

Yes, and in Seminyak that is how most sessions start. We take a few frames at the villa or hotel — the pool, the garden — then walk to the beach for the last light. If your villa is more than a few minutes from the sand, add an extra hour ($100) so the beach still gets its time. Travel within Seminyak, Petitenget, Legian and Kerobokan is included. If your hotel has rules about outside photographers, we will ask them in advance.

### How do you photograph small children on the beach?

By letting them play. We book the half hour before sunset, when the sand has cooled, and start with games at the waterline rather than posed groups. Most of the strongest family frames come in the first twenty minutes, before tiredness sets in. A spare set of clothes helps — someone always ends up in the sea. Session length can be shortened for toddlers without changing the price.

### Can we have drone shots in Seminyak?

Usually not. Seminyak is only a few kilometres from Ngurah Rai, within the airport's restricted zone, and the beach is busy with people we would be flying over. If aerial shots matter to you, we suggest adding a session at Pererenan or on the Bukit, or booking the drone on Nusa Penida, where the rules and the views are both more generous.

### Is Seminyak beach clean enough for photos?

From April to October, generally yes, and hotels rake their stretches each morning. In the wet season, especially December to February, westerly winds and river runoff can bring plastic and debris onto the sand after storms. We check the beach on the day and choose the cleanest stretch, or switch to the villa and the lanes; we can also tidy the frame in editing when it is a few stray pieces.
