# Labuan Bajo

> Labuan Bajo is the harbour town on the western tip of Flores where Komodo trips begin — one morning out here can hold a savanna ridge above three bays, a pink-sand beach and the deck of a wooden phinisi.

The town itself is small: a waterfront of dive shops and cafés, a harbour packed with traditional phinisi schooners and hills behind it that look west over a scatter of islands. Those hills are where we shoot sunset on the arrival day. The real work happens inside Komodo National Park, one to three hours away by speedboat — Padar’s ridgeline, the pink sand on Komodo Island, the Taka Makassar sandbar, the reefs at Kanawa and the dragons on Rinca and Komodo.

There are two ways to do it. A speedboat day trip leaves around four in the morning for sunrise on Padar and is back by mid-afternoon — fast, and good for drone video. An overnight phinisi trip is slower and more beautiful: you wake at anchor, the deck becomes the set, and sunset at Kalong Island ends with thousands of flying foxes leaving the mangroves. We plan the shoot around the boat’s route, not the other way round. Park entry, boat charter and ranger fees are separate from the booking, and dragons are photographed only with a ranger and from a distance — they are not a backdrop for posing.

## When to go

The dry season runs from about April to November and is the boat season. April to June brings calm seas and hills still green from the rains; from July the savanna turns gold-brown and the light is harsh by mid-morning, so sunrise matters more. July and August are the busiest months and can bring a stiff southerly wind on the crossings to Padar. September to November is often the sweet spot: calmer water, clear skies, fewer boats. In the wet season, December to March, the islands are lush, but squalls are frequent and the harbour master sometimes suspends sailings in high waves, especially in January and February — keep a spare day.

## Photo spots

### Padar Island viewpoint

- Coordinates: -8.6578, 119.5795
- Best time: Sunrise — speedboats leave Labuan Bajo around 4:00–4:30
- Access and permits: Komodo National Park entry plus a Padar trekking fee, paid in Labuan Bajo or at the jetty; drone use needs a separate park permit

The view that sells Komodo: a thin ridge of hills between three bays, one white, one dark and one faintly pink. A stairway climbs to the first viewpoint in 20–40 minutes; the classic frame is from the second or third landing, shooting south with a 16–24 mm lens. Climb in trainers and change into the dress at the top — the steps are steep and dusty. Day boats arrive from about 6:30, after which the path is a procession and the heat builds fast, so the best window for the shoot is the first hour of light.

- **January–May**: Hills are green after the rains — softer, more tropical frames; check sea conditions before committing.
- **July–October**: Gold-brown savanna and the strongest contrast with the water; harsh light by 8:00.

### Pink Beach, Komodo Island

- Coordinates: -8.602, 119.513
- Best time: Mid-morning, after Padar, when the sun is high over the shallows
- Access and permits: Covered by the national park entry; boat access only

One of the few beaches where the pink is genuinely visible to the eye: crushed red organ-pipe coral mixes with white sand, strongest at the waterline and in the shallows. The colour needs high sun, so this is the stop after Padar, not before. A short climb on the hill at the end of the beach gives the overhead view of the pink curve against the reef. Most day boats stop here, so we look for a gap between groups; never take sand or coral — rangers check bags.

### Komodo dragons at Loh Buaya, Rinca

- Coordinates: -8.654, 119.718
- Best time: Early morning, when the dragons are active and before the heat
- Access and permits: Park entry plus a mandatory ranger guide, paid at the ranger station

You walk a fixed trail with a ranger carrying a forked stick, and the dragons are wherever they happen to be — often resting near the ranger station. Rangers keep visitors at about five metres; we shoot on a 70–200 mm lens, which also compresses the dry forest behind into a clean background. This is a travel frame, not a posed portrait: no sitting near a dragon, no flash, no running. Visitors who are menstruating are asked to tell the ranger beforehand, as the animals respond to the scent of blood.

### Kanawa Island

- Coordinates: -8.495, 119.758
- Best time: Late morning to early afternoon, for clear water over the reef
- Access and permits: Landing fee for day visitors, paid at the jetty

A small island forty minutes from town with a long wooden jetty over reef so clear you can photograph starfish and coral from the planks. The jetty is the frame: shoot along it towards the island or down into the water with a polariser to cut the glare. Behind the beach a short, steep path climbs to a viewpoint over the reef flats. It is the gentlest snorkel stop in the area — shallow, sheltered — so it suits families and an in-water couple sequence.

### Sylvia Hill

- Coordinates: -8.47, 119.874
- Best time: Sunset, arriving 45 minutes early
- Access and permits: Small entry or parking fee

A grassy hill about fifteen minutes north of town that looks west over the bay and a chain of islands — the arrival-day shoot that needs no boat. The sun sets over the water, so you get backlit silhouettes on the ridge and, after it drops, a long pink and violet afterglow over the islands. Locals and visitors gather, but the hill is broad enough to find space. The path is short but loose; flat shoes for the walk, heels for the frame.

### Phinisi deck at anchor

- Coordinates: -8.492, 119.88
- Best time: Golden hour at anchor, and sunrise the morning after
- Access and permits: We shoot aboard your chartered boat; the charter itself is not included

Traditional wooden schooners built on the Sulawesi pattern, now fitted out as cruise boats, carry most overnight trips from Labuan Bajo’s harbour. The deck is a ready-made set: teak, rigging, sails and an anchorage with no one else in the frame. We like the bow at golden hour, a drone pass as the boat swings on its anchor, and sunset off Kalong Island when the flying foxes stream out overhead. Boats move, so we brief the captain on where to anchor before the sun drops.

## Frequently asked questions

### Speedboat day trip or overnight phinisi — which is better for photos?

For a short trip and drone video, the speedboat: sunrise on Padar, Pink Beach and a reef stop, back by mid-afternoon. For couples and honeymoons, the phinisi: you shoot sunset and sunrise at anchor without a 4 a.m. transfer, and the deck adds a second set. We can join either. Book the boat first, then we fit the session to its route.

### Are Komodo National Park fees included in the price?

No. Park entry, ranger guides, Padar trekking fees and any drone permit are paid separately, and the tariffs have been revised several times in recent years. We send the current figures when you book and can help arrange tickets through your boat operator, who usually handles them on the day.

### Can you fly a drone inside Komodo National Park?

Only with the park’s permission, and rangers do check. We apply in advance and fly within its terms: no flights over the dragons, away from other visitors on Padar’s stairway, and mostly over water and ridgelines. Without a permit we shoot from the boat and the hills on the mainland, where the rules are the standard Indonesian ones.

### How do we get to Labuan Bajo from Bali?

By air: direct flights from Bali to Komodo Airport (LBJ) take a little over an hour and run several times a day. The airport is five minutes from the waterfront. Some liveaboard cruises sail from Lombok over several days instead. Arrive at least a day before any boat departure — flight delays are common, and boats leave at dawn.
