# Gili Islands

> Three car-free islands off Lombok where the only traffic is bicycles and cidomo horse carts, the water is clear enough to photograph turtles from the surface, and every west-facing beach looks straight across at Bali’s Mount Agung at sunset.

Each Gili has its own temperament, and we match the island to the shoot. Gili Trawangan is the largest and liveliest: beach bars, sunset swings and a night market, good for content and for couples who want energy in the frame. Gili Meno, in the middle, is the quietest — long empty sand, a salt lake and the underwater statues off its west coast — which makes it the honeymoon and proposal island. Gili Air sits closest to Lombok, with a relaxed village feel and sunrise views of Rinjani across the strait.

Logistics shape everything. There are no motor vehicles, so we work on foot or by bicycle and keep the kit light; a full loop of Gili T takes about an hour on foot. Fast boats run from Bali — Padang Bai, Serangan and Amed — in roughly one and a half to two and a half hours, and the public boat crosses from Bangsal on Lombok in about twenty minutes. Island-hopping boats link the three islands, so two islands in one session is possible if the timetable cooperates. For snorkel frames we bring an underwater housing; turtles feed over the seagrass close to shore on all three islands.

## When to go

April to October is the dry season: clear skies, calmer crossings and the best underwater visibility, with Mount Agung sharp on the horizon most evenings. July and August are the busiest months — book boats and the sunset swings early. From December to February the wet season brings afternoon storms and rougher water in the Lombok Strait; fast boats from Bali are sometimes delayed or cancelled, so we never schedule a Gili shoot on the day of an onward flight. Visibility drops for a day or two after heavy rain, but mornings are often bright and the islands are noticeably quieter.

## Photo spots

### Gili Trawangan sunset swings

- Coordinates: -8.346, 116.027
- Best time: The last 45 minutes before sunset
- Access and permits: Swings belong to beach bars and hotels; usually a drink order or a small fee

The west coast of Gili T is a line of wooden swings set in the shallows, with Bali’s Mount Agung on the horizon behind them. Every swing has a queue at sunset, so we arrive an hour early, shoot the backlit silhouettes from low in the water and move to a quieter swing further north once the crowd settles. Wear something that reads well in silhouette — a flowing dress or loose shirt; detail disappears against the sun. It is a twenty-minute bicycle ride from the harbour along the coast path.

- **March and September**: Around the equinoxes the sun sets almost directly behind Mount Agung — the frame people come for.
- **June and December**: The sun drops well to the right of the volcano in June and to the left in December; we angle the swings accordingly.

### Nest underwater statues, Gili Meno

- Coordinates: -8.3485, 116.0505
- Best time: 9:00–11:00, when the sun is high enough to light the seabed and before the tour boats
- Access and permits: Free to snorkel from the shore; gear rental and boat tours extra

A ring of 48 life-size figures by the sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, sunk off Gili Meno’s west coast in 2017 and now crusted with coral. They lie at roughly three to four metres, close enough to swim out from the beach. From the surface you get the circle in one frame; for a portrait among the statues, a confident swimmer duck-dives and holds a pose for a few seconds — we brief it on land first. Current runs along this coast, so we go at slack water when we can, and nobody stands on or touches the sculptures.

### Gili Trawangan hill

- Coordinates: -8.354, 116.032
- Best time: Sunrise, on clear dry-season mornings
- Access and permits: Free; a 15-minute walk up a dirt path from the south coast

The only high ground on the Gilis, on the south end of Gili Trawangan. At dawn it looks east over Gili Meno and Gili Air to Lombok, with Rinjani rising behind them when the air is clear — a layered view of all three islands that most visitors never see because they are still asleep. The sun comes up behind the islands, so we shoot either into it for silhouettes or turn to the warm side light on the slope. Remnants of an old Japanese bunker sit near the top. Bring a headlamp for the walk up.

### Gili Air east coast

- Coordinates: -8.357, 116.087
- Best time: Sunrise to 8:00
- Access and permits: Free public beach

Gili Air faces Lombok across a narrow channel, so its east side gets the sunrise and, on dry-season mornings, Rinjani standing over the water. The beach is lined with low-key cafés, bean bags and outrigger boats pulled up on the sand — props that look lived-in rather than staged. It is the gentlest of the three islands for a family or a proposal: shallow water, few people before eight, and lanes shaded by palms for a walking sequence. Horse carts pass along the coastal path; we time frames between them.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do we get to the Gilis, and does the photographer come from Bali?

Most guests take a fast boat from Bali (Padang Bai, Serangan or Amed) or fly to Lombok and cross from Bangsal. The photographer travels to you; the island-transfer add-on covers that coordination. Boat tickets are not included. Because crossings can be delayed in rough weather, we prefer to shoot on your second evening on the island rather than the afternoon you arrive.

### Which Gili is best for a honeymoon or a proposal?

Gili Meno, if privacy matters most: long empty beaches, few bars, and the underwater statues for something unusual. Gili Air is a good middle ground with more cafés and a sunrise over Lombok. Gili Trawangan suits couples who want the sunset swings and a livelier evening afterwards. For a proposal we scout the exact spot the day before so the hidden position and the timing are fixed.

### Are drones allowed on the Gili Islands?

There is no airport nearby, so the islands are workable for drones under the normal Indonesian rules: registered aircraft, line of sight, no flying over crowds. In practice we avoid the busy sunset strip on Gili T, ask resorts before flying over their property, and watch the wind over the strait. Morning flights over the reef and the turquoise channels between the islands give the cleanest aerials.

### We are not strong swimmers. Can we still get underwater photos?

Yes. Turtles feed over seagrass in water you can stand in on parts of all three islands, and half-in, half-out frames at the waterline need no swimming at all. For the Nest statues off Gili Meno we can shoot you from the surface in a life vest; diving down to pose is optional and only for those who are comfortable. Safety comes before the shot every time.
