# Bali

> Bali takes two to three hours to cross and its best light lasts about forty minutes at each end of the day, so every shoot here is planned backwards from sunrise or sunset — and from the traffic in between.

Most people picture Bali as one place, but for a shoot it behaves like four. The south — Canggu, Seminyak, the Bukit — faces the Indian Ocean and gets its light at sunset. Ubud and the rice valleys of the centre sit inland, where morning mist and soft shade do the work. The highlands around Bedugul and Kintamani are cool, often under cloud by late morning, and an hour and a half from the coast. The east, with Lempuyang and Mount Agung, is a pre-dawn drive from almost anywhere. Choosing a location is mostly choosing what you can reach at the right hour from where you are staying.

This page covers the places that belong to no single area: the temple gates of Lempuyang, the lake temple at Beratan, the Jatiluwih terraces, the Batur caldera and the waterfalls of the centre and north. Once driving is counted, each is a half-day or full-day commitment, so we usually pair one of them with a shoot near your hotel rather than chaining three in a day. Temples need a sarong and sash, and ceremonies come before photographs — on a festival day a gate may be closed to visitors or a road held for a procession. We check the Balinese calendar when we schedule and tell you in advance if a date is likely to change the plan.

## When to go

The dry season runs roughly April to October: clearer mornings, steadier sunsets in the south and the best odds of seeing Mount Agung from Lempuyang. July, August and the Christmas–New Year fortnight are the busiest weeks, with queues at every famous spot. November to March is the wet season — mornings are usually clear and storms build in the afternoon, so we move shoots to sunrise and keep a backup slot, rescheduled free if rain takes it. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, usually in March, shuts the whole island for 24 hours, airport included. Galungan and Kuningan line every village street with tall bamboo penjor and fill the roads with processions; some temples close to visitors on those days.

## Photo spots

### Pura Lempuyang Luhur (Gates of Heaven)

- Coordinates: -8.3909, 115.6318
- Best time: Arrive by 6:00 — Mount Agung is usually clear until about 9
- Access and permits: Donation around IDR 100,000 with sarong, plus a shuttle up the hill; numbered queue for the gate photo

The split gate of Penataran Agung frames Mount Agung to the west, so morning sun lights the volcano instead of flaring into the lens. The famous "reflection" is a small mirror a temple helper holds under a phone — we can shoot it, but we also work the gate wide from the side steps, which needs no queue at all. On busy mornings the wait for the centre spot runs two to three hours, which is why we arrive before the tour vans. If cloud has already swallowed the summit, we do not wait for it to lift; the dragon stairways and the upper courtyards still make the trip worthwhile.

- **April–October**: Agung is visible on most early mornings; queues are longest in July and August.
- **November–March**: Shorter queues, but the volcano is often hidden by 8:00 — sunrise or nothing.

### Pura Ulun Danu Beratan

- Coordinates: -8.2752, 115.1668
- Best time: At opening, around 7:00, while the lake is still and misty
- Access and permits: Ticket around IDR 75,000 for foreign adults; no drones over the temple

The eleven-tiered meru seems to float when the lake is high, and at about 1,200 metres the morning mist sits on the water until the sun burns through. Arrive at opening and you have the shoreline nearly to yourself for half an hour before the buses from the south. Inner courtyards close during ceremonies, but the lakeside gardens are enough for portraits. It is cold by Bali standards, so bring a layer for the drive up. Pair it with Jatiluwih or the twin-lakes viewpoint above Munduk rather than coming back south in between.

### Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

- Coordinates: -8.3706, 115.1316
- Best time: Early morning, or the last two hours before sunset
- Access and permits: Entry around IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors; the walking trails are free once inside

Jatiluwih is part of the UNESCO-listed subak landscape, and far larger and quieter than Tegallalang: terraces run for kilometres under Mount Batukaru with no swings or souvenir stalls in the frame. Colour depends entirely on the planting cycle — vivid green a few weeks after planting, gold before harvest, flooded mirrors just after — so we ask growers what the fields are doing before committing a pre-wedding here. Paths are narrow dykes between paddies; we stay on them. Wear flat shoes for the walk and change for the photographs.

- **Before harvest**: Gold terraces and low side light in the late afternoon — the strongest pre-wedding look.
- **Just after planting**: Flooded paddies reflect the sky; best on a still, clear morning.

### Mount Batur

- Coordinates: -8.242, 115.3753
- Best time: Sunrise, which means leaving the trailhead around 4:00
- Access and permits: A licensed local guide is required for the summit trek, paid separately; the Kintamani rim viewpoints are free

Two very different shoots share this name. The summit trek is about two hours up in the dark to watch the sun rise behind Mount Agung across Lake Batur — rewarding, but you arrive sweaty among a line of headlamps, so it suits active couples in hiking clothes rather than gowns. The gentler option is the caldera rim at Kintamani or the black lava fields on the lake side, reached by car or jeep, where we can shoot styled portraits with no climb. Either way, mist often fills the caldera at dawn; the hour after sunrise usually looks better than the moment itself.

### Tukad Cepung Waterfall

- Coordinates: -8.4363, 115.388
- Best time: Roughly 9:00–11:00 for the light beams, dry season
- Access and permits: Entry around IDR 20,000; expect wet feet — the path runs along the stream

The fall drops into a narrow canyon half-roofed by rock, and on clear dry-season mornings the sun cuts through the gap in visible shafts. That is why everyone comes, and why a short queue forms for the centre rock between nine and eleven. Spray hangs in the air, so we keep lens cloths ready and wardrobe simple — anything floaty gets soaked. After heavy rain the water turns brown and the beams vanish, so in the wet season we confirm conditions the morning before driving out. It is about an hour from Ubud and an easy add-on to a shoot there.

### Sekumpul Waterfall

- Coordinates: -8.1726, 115.1823
- Best time: Mid-morning, before cloud builds over the north
- Access and permits: Entry with a local guide, from around IDR 125,000 depending on route; steep stairs, about 30 minutes down

Sekumpul is several falls side by side, up to roughly 80 metres, in a jungle amphitheatre in the far north — about two and a half hours from the south coast, so a day trip in its own right. The strongest frame is from the viewpoint above, with the whole curtain and the valley in one shot. Going down to the base means hundreds of steps and a river crossing, and you arrive wet. It sees a fraction of Tukad Cepung's crowds. We schedule it on the way to or from a Munduk or Lovina stay, never as a quick add-on from the south.

## Districts

- [Ubud](https://www.senjalight.com/destinations/ubud.md) — Ubud is a morning town for photographs: by nine the terraces fill and the valley heat flattens the light, but at sunrise the jungle is cool, misty and almost empty.
- [Canggu](https://www.senjalight.com/destinations/canggu.md) — Canggu faces due west onto black volcanic sand, so the sun sets straight into the sea and the hour before it is the only time we plan beach shoots here.
- [Seminyak](https://www.senjalight.com/destinations/seminyak.md) — Seminyak is the shoot for people who want to stay close to the hotel: a long, flat sunset beach within walking distance of most villas, and no drive eating into the session.
- [Uluwatu](https://www.senjalight.com/destinations/uluwatu.md) — On the Bukit the beaches sit at the foot of limestone cliffs, so most of them are reached by long staircases and lose the sun an hour before the clifftops do — we shoot the beaches early and the cliffs at sunset.
- [Nusa Penida](https://www.senjalight.com/destinations/nusa-penida.md) — Nusa Penida's two famous coasts are an hour and a half apart on rough roads, so a day trip covers the west or the east — and the shoots that work best are the ones that stay overnight.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are temple donations and entry tickets included in the price?

No. Entry tickets, temple donations and sarong rental are paid on the spot by each guest, and they are not part of the shoot price. At most places it is a few dollars per person; Lempuyang costs more once the shuttle is counted. When we plan the route we list the expected amount for every stop, so you know the total before you confirm and can bring cash in rupiah.

### Can you fly a drone anywhere in Bali?

No. Indonesian rules restrict flying around Ngurah Rai airport, which covers much of the south including Kuta and Jimbaran, and over temples or ceremonies without permission. Some beach clubs and resorts ban drones on their property. We fly only where it is legal and agreed with the landowner, and we tell you at the planning stage which of your chosen spots can have aerial shots and which cannot.

### How far apart are the famous spots?

Further than the map suggests. From Canggu or Seminyak, Lempuyang is about two and a half to three hours each way, Ulun Danu Beratan around two, and Ubud one to one and a half depending on traffic. That is why we suggest one distant icon plus one location near your hotel per shoot. Trying to fit Lempuyang, Tegallalang and a waterfall into one morning means spending most of it in the car.

### What happens if it rains on the day?

From November to March storms usually arrive in the afternoon, so in the wet season we book sunrise and morning slots, which are clear most days. If rain still takes the slot, the shoot moves to another time or day at no cost. Short showers are often an advantage: wet streets, steaming rice fields and dramatic sky. We decide together on the morning, with a radar check, rather than cancelling in advance.
