A pre-wedding photoshoot in Bali is a styled engagement session, often with two outfits and two contrasting locations, such as Ubud's rice terraces at sunrise and Uluwatu's cliffs at sunset. Ours starts at 30 minutes in one location and one outfit, from $590 with 15+ edited photos delivered within seven days; a second location and outfit are added as extra hours at $100 each.

> The short version: start with one location and one outfit, and add extra hours if you want the classic two-location day. Pick one green location and one ocean location, two outfits that contrast, a date in the dry season if you can, and at least two days before your flight home. Hair and make-up, a drone and a flying dress are optional add-ons.

## What a pre-wedding shoot is, and why Bali

Pre-wedding photography started as a tradition in East and South-East Asia and is now popular everywhere: a couple travels before the wedding for a set of polished, cinematic portraits that are used on invitations, at the reception and in the wedding album. Indonesia has a strong pre-wedding culture of its own, and Bali is one of the places couples come to for it.

The reason is variety within reach. In one day you can go from emerald terraces and jungle to limestone cliffs over the Indian Ocean, and the light at both ends of the day is soft and warm.

## Choosing the two locations

A second location means adding extra hours to the 30-minute start, so it is worth knowing which pairs work. The strongest pre-wedding galleries have contrast: one location that is green and textured, one that is open and bright. A few combinations that work well:

- **Ubud terraces at sunrise, then a jungle or river valley.** All green, soft and romantic; one area, so less driving. See the [Ubud pre-wedding shoot](https://www.senjalight.com/services/pre-wedding/ubud).
- **Ubud at sunrise, Uluwatu at sunset.** The classic contrast, but a long day with a long drive in the middle. Plan a rest at your hotel between the two halves.
- **Uluwatu cliffs and a beach below.** Ocean-only, but the cliff top and the sand at low tide look very different.
- **A villa and the coast.** Good if you want a styled, editorial feel with interiors as well as landscape.

Temples are beautiful but are active places of worship. Sarongs and sashes are required, and priests may limit where you can shoot; we always ask first.

## Beyond Bali

If you are based elsewhere in Indonesia, or want something no one else in your circle has, the country offers very different backdrops:

- **Mount Bromo** in East Java: volcanic sand sea, crater rim and sunrise over the caldera. Cold before dawn, unforgettable at first light. See the [Mount Bromo pre-wedding shoot](https://www.senjalight.com/services/pre-wedding/mount-bromo).
- **Yogyakarta**: temples, royal heritage and old streets, ideal for traditional Javanese outfits.
- **Jakarta**: city skyline, colonial old town and modern architecture for an urban look.

National parks such as Bromo charge entry and may require separate permits, especially for a drone.

## Outfits: two looks that tell a story

- **One formal, one relaxed.** A wedding gown or evening dress with a suit for the first look, then something light and flowing for the second.
- **One traditional, one modern.** Many couples choose a traditional outfit from their own culture, or rent Balinese ceremonial dress for one look.
- **Coordinate, do not match.** Colours that sit well together photograph better than identical ones.
- **Think about the backdrop.** Strong colours against green terraces; whites and pastels against darker cliffs or interiors.
- **Bring comfortable shoes** for walking between frames, especially on cliff paths and terrace steps.

A flying dress can be added as a third look for a few frames, and it is especially striking on the terraces.

## A sample timeline for a two-location day

This is the long version, built from the 30-minute start plus extra hours.

1. **04:30–05:00**: hair and make-up at your hotel, if booked.
2. **Sunrise**: first location and first outfit.
3. **Late morning**: back to the hotel, rest, lunch and outfit change.
4. **Late afternoon**: drive to the second location.
5. **Last 90 minutes before sunset**: second location and second outfit.

The shooting time is split across the two light windows, so you are not standing in the midday sun. A one-location shoot simply takes the better of the two windows.

## How to feel natural in front of the camera

Most couples who book a pre-wedding shoot are not used to being photographed, and that is completely normal. The first few minutes are always the stiffest. We start with simple, moving poses — walking together, turning towards each other, quiet moments where you talk rather than pose — and build up to the more cinematic frames once you have relaxed.

A few things help a lot. Get enough sleep the night before a sunrise start. Eat something before the session and bring water. Agree in advance on a couple of references you both like, so the direction feels familiar. And let the shoot be part of the experience: it is one of the few times you will spend together focused only on each other before the wedding rush begins.

## When to book and when to shoot

- **Season**: the dry season, roughly April to October, is the most reliable. The wet season still works, because rain usually comes in the afternoon, but keep a spare day.
- **Timing within your trip**: shoot early in your stay, at least two days before your flight, so there is room to reschedule for weather.
- **Lead time**: book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for July, August and the Christmas holidays.
- **Avoid Nyepi**: the whole island shuts down for a day, usually in March.

## Video and drone

Many couples add movement to their pre-wedding gallery. The drone add-on brings aerial frames of the terraces or cliffs. If you want a proper film for the reception, a [couple video](https://www.senjalight.com/services/couple-video) is a 60–90 second film with a 30-second vertical teaser, from $390, and can be planned on the same day.

## Pre-wedding, elopement or wedding?

A pre-wedding shoot is portraits only: no ceremony, no guests. If you are thinking about actually marrying in Bali, just the two of you, look at [elopement photography](https://www.senjalight.com/services/elopement), which covers a small ceremony and portraits straight after.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a pre-wedding photoshoot in Bali take?

The pre-wedding starts at 30 minutes in one location and one outfit. Each extra hour is $100; with a second location the time is usually split between sunrise and sunset so you are not working in the midday sun.

### Can we do Ubud and Uluwatu on the same day?

Yes, it is a classic combination: Ubud at sunrise, Uluwatu at sunset, booked as the 30-minute start plus extra hours. It is a long day with a long drive, so plan a rest at your hotel between the two halves.

### When will we receive the photos?

The full gallery of 15+ edited photos is delivered within seven days. There is no express option on a pre-wedding, so if the photos are for a save-the-date, leave a week before it is due.

### Is hair and make-up included?

No, it is an optional add-on for $90. Book it together with the shoot so the artist can be scheduled before sunrise.
